You will not necessarily need to speak perfect french but you will want to learn enough french to be able to ask basic directions, order a meal and give directions to a taxi. Sometimes the best part of going to Paris is when you speak to a local who advises you on places to go and things to do.
I’d recommend this site on how to teach yourself french because it compares different french learning software and gives good advice.
